Tri.on is a remote controlled robot concept specially designed to be used by the fire brigades or disaster control unit. The main inspiration of this concept came from the drive of generating something that can substitute a human being under tremendously dangerous conditions. Tri.on robot features four wheel shaped rolling tires, each with 3 inner wheels to make the tires roll, allowing the robot to run over any sorts of uneven surfaces such as stairs. It has two hands that can move in any direction and two holders in the end of the hands that provides strong grip when picking up an object.

The tasks of “Tri.On”:
- evaluation of potential dangers by means of various sensors
- taking samples of dangerous substances for further analysis
- precautions to avoid the spreading of dangerous substances, for example sealing leaks or depressurization of containers.

In order to accomplish these tasks, Tri.On is equipped with state of the art sensors. In addition, the robot has stowage for up to three tools in it`s torso.

The Mazda MX-5 is a Superlight concept car which is actually an awesome, purpose-built, speedster transformation of Mazda Miata. This 995 Kg, cold-filtered and carbon fiber made sports car will be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show to showcase one of the best interpretations of the car manufacturer. Mazda has added few spectacularly unbelievable features with the car to make it cool and get the attention which starts with the high mounted break lights on the roll hoops. The dash elements are made of carbon fiber and hold real toggle switches, even the shift knob has been sliced down to diminish weight and enhance styling of this two-seater supercar.

The numbers tell the story: Of the 648 people killed by lightning in the U.S. from 1995 to 2008, 82 percent were male. And as much as we were hoping to uncover a biological cause—extra iron in the male cranium, perhaps, or the conductive properties of testosterone—it turns out men are… just kind of stupid. “Men take more risks in lightning storms,” says John Jensenius, a lightning safety expert with the National Weather Service.

Men are less willing to give up what they’re doing just because of a little inclement weather, Jensenius says, and will continue to engage in pastimes that make them vulnerable, such as fishing, camping and golfing. Recreational or sports-related activities are involved in almost half of all lightning-related deaths.

Peter Todd, a behavioral psychologist at Indiana University, suspects the difference between the sexes boils down to the basic risk-versus-reward systems that have been part of our biological wiring for thousands of years. For women, Todd explains, the priorities are to protect one’s reproductive role and to care for offspring, which outweighs any inclination to attract potential mates by exhibiting bold behavior.

But for men, Todd says, the risk of getting struck by lightning could be outweighed by the reward of proving to other men—and potential female mates—that they’re not afraid of getting struck by lightning. This is particularly true for young men, who have the most to gain by impressing others, thereby raising their status as attractive, daring, healthy mates in the dating pool. And then, zap!

Patients with alcohol in their blood are less likely to die from head injuries, according to a new study in Archives of Surgery, a JAMA/Archives journal.

The researchers found that the patients who tested positive for alcohol were less likely to die than patients who had no alcohol in their bloodstream. They were also generally younger and had less severe injuries. But patients who had drunk alcohol did suffer more medical complications during their stay in the hospital.

In the study, Ali Salim and his colleagues from the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles looked at 38,019 patients with moderate to severe head injuries. The authors note that it is not clear how ethanol might reduce the risk of death from head injuries, with animal studies showing contradictory results. While several animal studies do show some beneficial effects of having a low level of alcohol in the blood, including a higher chance of survival, these benefits are lost at higher alcohol levels. And other studies actually show alcohol being associated with reduced survival.

Of course, alcohol increases the risk of getting injured in the first place, and the authors of the study point out that they looked at the mortality of patients already in hospital. But head injuries are becoming more common, especially among soldiers. The study raises the possibility of a new treatment for head injuries: in the future, perhaps doctors could save your life by administering a healthy dose of alcohol.
